Facetts of the new. It is not unusual for innovations to emerge with a certain lightness, almost in passing. Sometimes they come about by taking a fresh look at something already known. This is what happened in the development of the Facett armchair. Whilst on a visit to the Ligne Roset upholstery studio, brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec saw a machine capable of cutting multiple layers of fabric into ever more intricate shapes. In their constant search for new product forms they saw in the machine a novel approach combining craftsmanship with modern technology. According to the designers, what came out of this - the armchair of the Facett collection - is a "synthesis of an avant-garde vision and a return to the company's roots." The combination of minimalist simplicity with monolithic austerity lends a distinctive air to the Facett collection. Also significant is the interesting way the upholstery has been processed. The patches and seams of the multiple-stitched fabric are reminiscent of the precise art of diamond cutting or the intricate folding techniques of Japanese origami. The design of the footrest is highly functional. Forming a kind of kit, it fits beneath the front of the armchair, transforming it into a chaise longue. Furthermore, the footrest, in combination with one of the carpets from the collection, can be used as a backrest when sitting upright or as a headrest when lying down. The possible usage of the whole Facett collection has been functionally thought out, and due to their compact dimensions, they fit comfortably into rooms of various sizes. Their aesthetics unfold as easily in a spacious loft as in a small city apartment.

Footstool available. It brings together purity of design, sophistication of manufacture and a high level of comfort. Facett was used to furnish the lobby of the Hotel de la Paix in Rheims.

Year of design: 2005
